students in a machine shop

A field trip to Anoka Technical College and Anoka-Ramsey Community College last month provided eighth grade students from St. Francis Middle School (SFMS) the opportunity to explore potential college and career options and gain new perspectives, which could help them with course decisions in high school and life after graduation.

“Hands-on experiences like this provide a unique opportunity that students may never have otherwise,” said SFMS Principal Heidi Critchley. “It is essential that they learn about the world of work, various programs of study, and most importantly, themselves. In just four short years, they will be stepping into the workforce, military, specialized training, or college. Experiences like this help them make informed decisions about their future.”

All eighth grade students had the chance to tour the two campuses and spend a couple of hours learning about different areas of study that each of the schools offer. The sessions of about 20-25 minutes had engaging activities where students got a glimpse into certain programs and the careers they could lead to. View photos from the experience.

At Anoka Technical College, students attended sessions about:

  • Machining - Toured the machine shop and learned about some of the materials students produce.

  • Information Technology - Participated in a coding exercise.

  • Life-saving careers - Learned life-saving techniques using CPR Training Manikins.

  • Occupational Therapy Assistant - Participated in multiple exercises that Occupational Therapists would conduct with patients.

  • Medical Assistant & Architecture - Learned about the courses and careers through a presentation.

At Anoka-Ramsey Community College, students:

  • Toured the campus.

  • Participated in a career fair with 10 different businesses that featured a range of careers.

  • Attended a session about money management.

Student reactions:

  • Jace learned from Anoka Technical College how to code from the IT class, as well as the many different programs that they offer. In addition, Jace really enjoyed how nice and supportive the staff were from the college visit.

  • Kason enjoyed the experience as he learned more about the many different types of options available for students including welding, engineering, and the nursing program.

“A huge thank you to Anoka Technical College and Anoka-Ramsey Community College for opening their doors and inspiring our students,” Critchley said. “I would also like to thank Joe Bruhjell, 8th grade Engineering Tech teacher, Assistant Principal Nick Jacobs, and the 8th grade teachers for working so hard to make this happen!”
